These verses use parallelism to make their point about the rightness of sacrifice. Chapter 6 and 7 can be read together. What is the meaning of, â€Å"With what shall I approach the Lord,† and â€Å"Do homage to God on high?† This tells us that people wonder what they can bring to God. In the text, the matter of child sacrifice is discussed, â€Å"Shall I give my first-born for my transgression.† People address God and query the Lord as to what the Lord wants from them. These are the Lord’s accusations and explanations as to why he is punishing Israel. Here Micah presents the Lord’s case against Israel and illustrates the effect the punishment will have on them. The text goes on to list the many sacrifices that they have engaged in before God. The offerings are considered from the smallest possible offering to the most expensive, from burnt offerings to child sacrifice. The passage, to me, seems to reflect the people’s growing frustration with God. God has outlined a case against them and they seem taken aback that they have done anything to upset God. The point of the passage by laying out the sacrifices from least to most is that sacrifice can not be an empty gesture. Even the most lavish of sacrifices means nothing to God even if the person’s heart and mind are not fixed on God at all times. What is the meaning of, â€Å"He has told you, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk modestly with your God.† The Prophet tells the people what is required of them, justice, love of goodness and a modest walk with God. People have heard these words before, this is nothing new. God is not concerned with overt displays of piety, but instead demands inward growth with God. To do justice, one must first be just with himself. To love goodness, one, must cultivate goodness within. To live modestly, one must...

Prison Overcrowding Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Prison Overcrowding - Research Paper Example Generally, prison overcrowding is not a modern phenomenon because internal insurgencies and wars result in prison overcrowding. But in the modern context, several factors (say, apart from internal insurgencies and wars) force prisons to face the problem of overcrowding. Some people consider that prison overcrowding is deeply rooted in the functioning of the criminal justice system. But some others consider that prison overcrowding reflects the change in governance within the context of the Criminal Justice System. Still, one can see the modern concept of prison privatization curbs the development of the prison system because the government is no longer the protector of the prison system in general. Thesis statement: The research on prison overcrowding proves that the factors like privatization, less capacity of prisons, increase in crime rate, increase in incarceration, ineffective Criminal Justice System, and ineffective planning result in prison overcrowding. First of all, private prisons are entirely different from government prisons because the former is based upon contractual agreements with different government agencies and the latter is under the direct control of the government. This basic difference is exploited by the private prisons because profit (say, based upon the funding from the government) is the ultimate aim. In the beginning, private agencies were allowed to undertake some services related to the prison system like transportation and serving food. During the era of disinvestment, private prisons became popular in the US and UK. Gradually, other developed nations followed this path and private prisons began to flourish in different nations.

Late Stage Abortion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Late Stage Abortion - Essay Example This essay demonstrates different opinions and controversial meanings, that often surround abortion topic. This essay specifically takes a look on woman's right on abortion in general and late stage abortion as well. Controversial opinions of doctors and researches are also represented, but all agree that babies and their mothers have the right to be protected. This essay focues on what makes abortion victims. Its' suggests that the victim is not only denied experiences and projects, but there are some other things, which the aborted fetus cannot enjoy now but would have experienced them in future, which the fetus is denied or deprived of. There are also questions discussed such as: is it correct or not to kill unborn babies because it deprives them of their future. Late stage abortion is, mostly considered as wrong because logical arguments that surround it are about human rights. Some people claim that a woman has a right to privacy, entitled to her own decisions and act or behave in accordance to her own body to be carried out in terms of protection. However, when it comes to her committing an issue such as late stage abortion, their actions may be questioned. In conclusion, this essay simplifies to the two main conflicting events in this scenario. First one is whereby the women has the right to act to her own body and right to privacy. Or whether or not two individuals rights need to be in agreement, woman's and her unborn child. In addition, the women has obligation to the baby because she avoided using contraception to ward off pregnancy.

Learning Team Reflection Essay Example for Free

Learning Team Reflection Essay Learning Team D discussed the learning objectives provided for Week Three. Each Team Member posted a response to three informational questions posted by the Team Leader. During week three The Team Members felt comfortable with different topics. Sherly, Andrea and Katrina all felt the most comfortable with the topics dealing with Technology, R D, and Efficiency which were covered in chapter 11W. Sherly found the topic of invention the most fascinating because it allows people to just think up of an idea, experiment with it and develop it before finally developing it with the intent of putting it out on the market and earning some profits. An example of invention at work is a TV show on ABC called Shark Tank where inventors present their invention to members of the panel who are entrepreneurs/potential investors with the intention of selling a percentage of their business or product. Andrea felt that the chapter was an easy read and was more of a review on how businesses stay profitable and viable. From this chapter Andrea was able to learn that creating a fresh product at the optimal price is the key to success. Katrina was most interested in Technological Advance and Efficiency section covered in the chapter. The fact that improving ones technology can also contribute to economic efficiency was something that Katrina found interesting. Mark was comfortable with all the topics covered in week three and especially enjoyed learning more about the differences in operating in a monopoly, monopolistic competition, and an oligopoly. Danielle felt most comfortable with the process of supply and demand and how it plays an important role in the economy. Danielle feels that understanding how the supply and demand process works is beneficial and can be used to analyze decisions about prices and quantity. For Danielle having Learning Team D struggled with different topics that were covered during week three. Sherly struggled with Exploiting University and Government Scientific Research. Sherly thought that any product or potential product created by an individual or members of an organization could be patented. Andrea found it hard to understand visual presentations of the data by the example graphs. Andrea considered herself to be a visual learner but cannot seem to understand the graphs given. Katrina, like Andrea, found it hard to follow the examples given within each chapter but the reason behind her confusion dealt with actually being able to match the example to the reading. Katina felt that having to flip back and forth while reading to match the example that was given within the reading caused her to not fully understand what the example was trying to get across. Nonprice barriers to entry was the topic that Mark felt the most unsure about this week. Mark found it challenging to look beyond the numbers when analyzing something. Danielle struggled with pricing decisions, price elasticity, inelasticity, and elasticity of demand. The differences in monopolies and oligopolies was a bit of a struggle for Danielle but the examples that were provided within the reading helped her to grasp the information better. Each Team Member was able relate topics of the week to their organization’s field of business. Sherly works as an underwriter for an insurance company which provides health, life and disability insurance products and services. Reduced cost via process innovation was the topic that Sherly felt related to Underwriting. Sherly and her team are always looking for ways to change/update processes, reduce turnaround times between the receipt of an application for life/disability insurance coverage request to making the final determination whether to approve, postpone or decline a file. As an example, the introduction of a new system where applicants could go online to apply and depending on the information entered and the amount being requested, a determination can be done right there. This new system saved the company both time and money. We do not have to go through the omission process with this system since every question must be answered for the online application to be processed. When, we have to send applicants omission letters, the entire process takes longer since we have to wait to receive the missing information back from the applicant before the application can be processed. Andrea works in the finance industry for an airport. Andrea was able to apply the topic of mergers the most to my daily business field. At the airport, the airlines and rental car agencies combined resources on a regular basis. Department of Justice generally gets involved with these types of mergers to prevent monopoly behavior. For example, American and US Airways are currently under review and comment period for their merger. In addition to combining ticket counter space, it is anticipated that gates will be combined as well. The airport will lose money on the merger but customers will benefit from lower fares. The more customers that fly will make up for the shortfall in revenue for space rent lost by the airport. Katrina works in the field of Worker’s Compensation as a Claims Assistant. The topic of invention related the most to the type of work Katrina does at her job. Each day new claims are called into her office on a day to day bases and the way in which those calls are entered into the system must be efficient. Katrina and her team at her office created a new system for entering a new claim that is called into the office. Mark relates the topic of most of cost control and using developing technologies to lower cost to his field. That is an area we are constantly trying to improve upon whether the ideas come from our staff or from outside our organization and we work out a plan to implement them to help our business. Our franchise location does not develop technology but we have the opportunity to seek technology to increase the efficiency of our workers and also help save costs. Danielle works as a project manager for an energy efficiency consulting agency. As a project manager Danielle’s role is very significant in budgeting for a project for he/she is the one who determines the project costs and project budgets in line with the stakeholder’s specifications and resources. Budget allocation, collaborates with the project stakeholders and project financial coordinators to build a sensible budget plan that will sustain the whole project in all of its phases. Using cost control measures to insure they are staying within budget, as we understand the importance of increasing revenue and staying within budget. Revenue management is integral to a companys long-term strategy; without adequate income administration, the company may not be around long enough to implement its operating tactics. Each member of the Learning Team experienced a learning curve for Week Three. Sherly learning curve increased a little bit during this week. The additional information on monopoly provided Sherly with more information that helped her better understand what was taught in week two. The fact that certain opics such as monopoly, oligopoly, short run and long run, are being covered more in depth has also helped to increase her learning curve. Andrea’s still struggles with the graphs presented representing the demand curves. The economy of scale section has also been a struggle for her this week but Andrea has gone over the text in these sections multiple times for a better understanding. To increase her learning curve she finds that the lectures provided by our instructor breakdowns the topics in a mor e day to day format for easier comprehension. This week Katrina’s learning curve increased because she started to feel more comfortable with the terms and having a chapter that was easy to read through and understand made her feel more at ease with learning new Economic information. Mark’s learning curve for this week was changing his focus to look at big picture items using more theoretical concepts rather than concrete numbers. Mark enjoys the challenge that is presented by applying a different approach to analyzing what will impact a business from a market structure standpoint which will continue to increase his learning curve. Danielle feels that she’s beginning to understand the importance of Economics and how it relates to more than just money. Danielle hopes to continue to improve her understanding of the mathematical equations and graphs representing demand curves as the week’s progress. As the weeks go by the team still struggles with a few concepts but as the team moves forward they are developing and getting a better hold on the topics that are covered on a week to week bases.

Censorship Essay -- Essays Paper

Censorship After threatening the Communications Decency Act with a vetos of the past versions, President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law on February 8, 1996.1 Before hand, congress approved the largest change of the nation's communications laws in 62 years. One of the largest controversial topics included in the bill is the censorship of pornography, which now is a strenuously enforced crime of distributing knowingly to children under 18. The congress overwhelmingly passed the bill with a landslide 414-16 House vote and a 91-5 Senate vote.2 It seems now that the wide bill might not be what it cracked up to be, as it stands now, anyone who might upload James Joyce's Ulysses could be placed in jail for two years and have up to a $250,000 fine.3 Representatives of on-line services industries were concerned about the bill, and feared they could be held criminally responsible for Internet conversations.4 "We face a unique disturbing and urgent circumstance, because it is children who are the computer experts in our nations families," remarked a concerned Rep. Senator of India Dan Coats.5 Although in reality, censorship would do little to stop the pornography problems. The bill is a nation legislation trying to control a international network, which is virtually impossible. According to the First Amendment, Americans were granted to write anything they please, whether it's indecent or not, several series of judicial decisions also helped the freedom down the road.6 Nebraskan Democrat James Exon, put together an informational binder known as the Blue Book to show the Senate about the goings on within the Internet.7 Along the pages of the Blue Book were pictures of people bound and being burned by cigarettes, people pierced with swords and people involved in sexual activities with animals.8 The Senate, acknowledging their ignorance of the Internet, passed Exon's proposal after seeing the pictures in the Blue Book.9 Along with distribution of pornography, a person carries the chance of two years in prison and a $250,000 fine which is a good reason to restrict much of the flow.10 The Internet is extremely massive, filled with usenet newsgroups, web pages, IRC channels, ftp sites, gopher sites and much more. The Internet is the last and largest frontier of uncensored speech, anything from friendly chat to child por... ...ther person might be secretly trading child porn. With over 30 million users on the Internet, no one can guarantee that no pornography will stray down from someone. Bibliography "Background Information." ADA Sports Management Essay

The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) has changed the way wherein open organizations offer recreational activities. My paper will assess the privileges of the disabled individual who might want to take an interest in recreational sport under their rights given by the ADA. My paper will likewise talk about past models and court evaluations that made a point of reference for their rights. In 1990 the ADA was approved, but since then there have been many court decisions and complaints. Most of the decisions have supported the right of the disabled individual to enjoy recreational sport with able-bodied athletes in the most integrated way as possible. There are countless rules and rights established by the ADA and this paper will discuss the precedent cases in recreation. The disabled individual while participating in recreational sports has the right to take part in the most joined setting. This is characterized in the U. S. Division of Justice guidelines as the setting in which connection between individuals with and without disabilities is given to the greatest degree credible. See more: Basic Economic problem of Scarcity Essay As a result, each and every recreation and sport opportunity that is offered for individuals without having a disability is likewise accessible to the individual who has a disability. With a sensible convenience, he or she can take part nearby neighbors, relatives, companions, and others without disabilities in the hunt for energizing, compensating, and testing sport and recreation chances. Even though for individuals with disabilities they have a chance to play with other disabled athletes, they must also have the option to play with able-bodied athletes as well. A disabled individual has the right to sign up for and take part in recreation. In actuality, each and every parks and recreation program offered for individuals with disabilities is accessible to individuals without any disabilities. So as long as he or she meets â€Å"essential eligibility† necessities needed of all registrants, for example enrolling after the system is full and paying the same enlistment expense that others pay, support should be invited. There may be other very important qualification prerequisites, for example having the ability to serve, hit a strike, and hit a forehand, for somebody wishing to partake in a tennis competition. In which is supported by the National Center on Accessibility. McGovern 2003 states: â€Å"A person with a disability has the right to reasonable accommodations, provided by the activity organizer or sponsor, to meet essential eligibility requirements, if necessary to facilitate or enable participation in the activity of his or her choice. Accommodations include changes in rules and policies; extra staff for the coaching or management of the activity; a sign language interpreter or other aids for recreation consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing; Braille or large print documents for recreation consumers who are blind or have impaired vision; and other efforts to facilitate participation. † The overview of Anderson v. Little League Inc. Respondents, Little League baseball enterprise and its president, received a strategy that denied wheelchairs from being on the baseball field or in the mentors box. Offended party mentor had been an on-field base mentor in a wheelchair for three years around then the arrangement was embraced, yet was equipped to keep serving as an on field base mentor since the neighborhood Little League declined to uphold the approach. Offended party launched activity compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), 42 U. S. C. S.  § 12182(a), for revelatory and injunctive alleviation since offended party accepted that litigant might not permit offended party to mentor on the field throughout the following season-end competition, where offended party was now chosen to mentor in the competition. The court allowed offended party’s requisition for a makeshift controlling request and urged respondents from averting or endeavoring to avoid offended party from taking part completely or being included to the full degree of offended party’s obligations as a mentor, and from threatening or undermining players and their families. The court discovered that the ADA connected to litigants and that offended party introduced no immediate risk to open security. This is one of the precedent cases regarding recreational sport given by the ADA. The case is Anderson v. Little League Inc in 1992 for a non-profit corporation. The rules of the Little League in 1992 denied a disabled individual in a wheelchair from being on the field Alliance authorities in Arizona had not implemented this control and Anderson had taken pleasure in contributing. In the same year Arizona Little League educated Anderson to implement Little League USA policy in the state competition. Anderson’s group had met all requirements for the competition, however now Anderson couldn’t be on the field. The Little League administer was received for the security of members. In any case administers, by their special character, has a tendency to segregate. Since Anderson cared to be on the field, he had no decision yet to head off to court. He did, winning an injunctive order precluding Little League from implementing the law. The Court said that Little League’s strict provision of the guideline to Anderson, without an evaluation of his capability, a recognizable proof of the danger he went through, and the thought of sensible way he could be accommodated, abused his rights under the ADA. Essentially, the Little League governs and treats all disabled individuals the same without respect for the reality, which was supported by McGovern 2013. MLB baseball player Jim Abbott pointed out some of his disadvantages of being a disabled individual when playing sports. He was born disabled without a right hand on September 19, 1967 and grew to love baseball, but being disabled came with disadvantages and here is what his take was: â€Å"Sports had always been my crutch. For an insecure kid who wanted very much to be accepted, success in athletics covered up a lot of hurt for a long time. But in 1996 it all came crashing down. I was failing. As hard as I tried it would just get worse. By the end of they year I was sent to the minor leagues for the first time in my life. I’m not going to tell you that I handled that year with all of the grace I would have liked. All I could do was to keep on trying. The following spring I was released from the Angels. Cleaned out my locker in front of my friends and drove home alone through the Arizona desert. † Disadvantages of being a disabled individual playing sports was more of a emotional disadvantage than a physical which was shown throughout Abbott’s speech. There are not only downsides to being a disabled youth in but also many ways they are benefitted through any recreational sport. All individually disabled youth need practice to help enhance their adaptability and go of movement. The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability refers to these extra focal points of being physically animated to help advance expertise and technique. Cooperation in games is likewise connected to better reviews in school and better conduct inside and outside of the classroom like more or less than 57% are expected to drop out of school, 49% are more likely to utilize drugs, more or less than 35% are more inclined to smoke, and about 27% are less averse to have been captured. Disabled individuals who take part in games or practice have been demonstrated to handle tough situations and bad circumstances better than individuals who don’t work out. They additionally experience less depression and are easier to cope with problem-focused situations. â€Å"Disabled youths’ social and communication skills improve. Students often learn desirable behaviors best from each other in a typical environment. They experience a decrease in stigmatization. Students with disabilities report feeling more like a part of their peer community because they are able to contribute to the team or group effort. Being an integral part of a group allows disabled youth to develop social judgment and take and follow peer leadership. Students with disabilities are able to foster friendships in a natural way and in a natural environment. This sense of belonging helps build self-esteem and a feeling of personal achievement. -Yvette J. Brown Disabled Baseball Progams In the same way as other professional sport groups, the Detroit Lions worked with different youth teams in Michigan to push participation at the recreational games. The Lions collectively welcomed youth teams to submit entrances and afterward, by lottery, the Lions might pick a group to visit a professional game and have certain seating for one dollar for each player. The group that won was a wheelchair sport group. The point when instructed regarding this by the group delegate, the Lions said the charge might now need to be higher than one dollar. When they found out a portion of the children who might go did not use wheelchairs, the Lions called attention to the deficiency of friend seats and said those kids might need to sit somewhere else. The Lions likewise noted their arrangement obliging disabled individuals to land for a visual examination to establish that the disabled individual did really need to use a wheelchair. The U. S Department of Justice requested the Lions to change their â€Å"see first† approach, only because of a complaint that was placed, to allow friend seating. And to give the individuals with disabilities the same prices as the able bodied athletes. The Lions were told to give more than $50,000 in stock to help maintain the group. The ADA states that no game or recreation supplier should charge a higher expense, or a surcharge, for the expense of facilities or the expense of giving recreation in the most integrated setting. In broad daylight park and recreation programs, a charge for comprehensive inclusion that requires a settlement that is not different in relation to an expense charged to different members who are not disabled individuals. For example in golf lesson the teacher uses oral direction. For a golfer who is hard of hearing, the oral guideline will not suit the deaf athlete. The parks and recreation branch should give a communication by the means of gestures and translators for that golfer. The golfer an expense for the lesson afterward will include a charge for the gesture based communication mediator. It can just charge the same expense it charges to different golfers. In conclusion, the cases above are essentially drawn from Title II of the ADA. Congress expected units of state and nearby government to act faster and have a higher limit for ADA consistence than Title III organizations.

John Deere and Company Essay

Complex Parts, Inc. has been a supplier of specialized parts to Deere & Company for the past 10 years, with annual sales of $3. 5 million. Over the past year the supplier has fallen behind in its ability to satisfy the guidelines outlined in Deere’s Achieving Excellence Program (AEP), a supplier evaluation process that promotes communication, trust, cooperation, and continuous improvement. Due to this decline, one of Deere’s supplier evaluation teams, consisting of four employees, has to make a quick recommendation about the future relationship between Deere & Complex Parts. The Achieving Excellence Program (AEP) evaluates, on a yearly basis, key parts of how a supplier is performing. It focuses on five key areas: quality, delivery, cost management, wavelength and technical support. The program classifies each supplier, from best to worst, as either Partner, Key, Approved or Conditional. AEP effectively assesses the supplier’s commitment to its relationship with Deere in such areas as enhancing communication, lowering costs, and improving design. The biggest drawback to the AEP is that it does not consider the full history of the supplier’s relationship to the company. The evaluation only focuses on the past year and not the historical highs and lows of productivity. The program also does not take into account the current economic conditions and how the market is performing. It examines what the supplier is doing to increase profits for Deere, but does not explore what Deere could be doing to help the supplier, beyond training, plaques and honors. The Achieving Excellence Program is an ideal way to analyze how a supplier is functioning, but it would be beneficial to include an assessment of how or what Deere & Company could do to aid the supplier. Historical information of how the supplier has performed, its current financial situation and the current market state or trends should all be considered as part of the appraisal of a supplier. Using the AEP evaluation, it is difficult to determine how Complex Parts has performed over the past year. While the supplier has done extremely well, it has also done very poorly, resulting in an adequate performance. Overall, the supplier has performed well, achieving a quality rating of 666 and a delivery rating of 8650, both well below the ideal for a Partner classification. Unfortunately, the past quarter showed a sharp drop in Complex Parts’ performance, achieving a delivery rating of 155,000, higher than the ideal rating for a Conditional supplier. Looking closer at other areas of the AEP, Complex Parts received a tepid score with both positive and negative aspects in all categories. The supplier was great at following through on suggestions for quality improvement and was very proactive, but had little plans for cost reductions or how to eliminate problems resulting in late deliveries. The company took an active role in keeping up with required specification changes, but did not return phone calls to the customer service group and cost Deere tremendously with weekly expedited deliveries. Complex Parts excellently internalized the Deere Quality Plan elements, took a lead role in getting the elements implemented, and improved quality performance over the past year, but did fall behind in employing the plan in its new facility, now 5 months into operation. Finally, Complex Parts’ R&D department was very impressive with several suggestions resulting in new product programs, but the supplied parts did not meet cost targets which reduced Deere’s projected profits, and new parts quotes were not being received in a timely fashion. Using the information received from the AEP evaluation, Complex Parts should be classified as a Key supplier. While there are many troubling areas, the exceptional performance in most areas of the AEP cannot be ignored. The supplier should not retain its Partner status, but it should be recognized as an important supply chain member. There are two main courses of action that the evaluation team can consider in regards to Complex Parts. The supplier can be downgraded to a Key or an Approved supplier or it can retain its current classification as Partner with a re-evaluation in six-months. Due to the low aspects in every category within the AEP assessment, Complex Parts should be downgraded to a Key or an Approved supplier. The company was given a performance summary every quarter and should not be surprised that its classification has dropped. The best alternative course of action would be to allow the company to keep its Partner rank with the provision that it will be re-evaluated in six months to determine the future of the relationship. Included in each alternative should also be the appraisal of the other two possible suppliers. Each company should receive an in-depth evaluation and classification for comparison with Complex Parts. There are both short-term and long-term implications to these recommendations that should also be considered before making a decision. In the short-term, Complex Parts would be rewarded for its high performance, but would recognize the need for improvement. The supplier would either enhance its troubled areas or it would risk being downgraded or replaced. Deere & Company stands to lose revenues due to increased costs in the short-term if the supplier does not quickly improve its performance. In the long-term, Deere & Company would show that the AEP is taken seriously and that long-term supplier relationships are a true goal of the company. It would also prove how dedicated the company is to achieving excellence and how continued improvement is a vital part of the company’s goals. While Complex Parts is currently a Partner supplier to Deere & Company, its future rests in the hands of the supplier evaluation team. Complex Parts has performed adequately over the past year, but falling aspects indicate that the company may not be able to live up to expectations in the coming year. With an assessment of other possible suppliers and by allowing Complex Parts to retain their supplier classification with an interim evaluation in six months to determine their fate, they will either increase performance or risk demotion. Deere & Company strives to develop long-term relationships with its suppliers and a quick decision based on only a year’s worth of data, and more specifically a low-performing quarter, would be detrimental to the company’s goals. More information needs to be included in the evaluation in order to gain the full picture of how the supplier is operating. With this additional information, Deere & Company will be able to fulfill its goal of a better supplier relationship.

Ode To A Nightingale Essays

Ode To A Nightingale Essays Ode To A Nightingale Essay Ode To A Nightingale Essay Both poems convey similar messages about life but in perspective Ode To A Grecian Urn seems to differ in some ways depending on the way you see the poem. In this poem we realise that Keats also tries to tell us that being human and having ups and downs of life is in some ways better than being still and never changing. On the urn things stay the same, the people on the urn never get to fulfil their desires as much as they would wish to as they are still. In life we can even though there are consequences to every action humans take whether it is bad or good. Keats describes the urn as a Cold Pastoral. This is maybe because the urn is lifeless, and in some ways humans prefer things that change and things that are warm in comparison to a cold lifeless never changing urn. In the lifetime of this urn it will remain the same, unlike life which is always changing which can be seem as more preferable than being an urn. Keats was attracted to the imaginary world of the urn as the places in the urn stayed the same forever. He wanted to be immortal like the Nightingale and the people on the Urn because he believed that as a human that as you get older life gets worse as a consequence of growing less attractive and dying and being frailer. In Ode To A Nightingale he says Where beauty cannot keep her lustrous eyes, but this contrasts with the statement in Ode To A Grecian Urn, which says For ever wilt thou love and she be fair. As one poem is about something that is natural and one poem is about something that is a piece of art it is harder to say what each one says about art. An urn is a vase like container made of pottery or stone with rounded bodies and narrow necks. They were widely used in ancient Greece and Rome to preserve the Ashes of the dead. As his brother was dying and many people he knew had already died it would not have been unusual for Keats to write about something like this. Ode To A Grecian Urn is an indoor poem; and deals with art and not nature. In this poem he also mentions the Elgin Marbles and other examples of Greek art. I think that Keats in some ways tries to convey the message that art is superior to human life. This is maybe because of the fact that things like the Urn do not change and the people in the Urn are always happy, much unlike human life although they are static. And because they cannot move it is in some ways not as superior to life as he might think. Is emptied of this folk, this pious morn? And, little town, thy streets for evermore will silent be. In some ways this is an advantage but in other ways it is also a relatively bad thing. In human life we get to fulfill our desires even though it leads us to undesirable consequences. The fact that things cannot be experiences fully in the immortal world described in Ode To A Nightingale s also shown in Ode To A Grecian Urn. For example, when Keats describes a couple shown on the urn, they are frozen at a good time in their relationship but they will never get to go any further and reach maximum happiness as they are frozen. Keats again decides that he would prefer to have extreme feelings of good or bad rather than always feeling okay Bold lover, never, never canst thou kiss, though winning near the goal.

Tibetan Situation Getting Sticky

Tibetan Situation Getting Sticky Tibetan Situation Getting Sticky Tibetan Situation Getting Sticky By Maeve Maddox I was startled to read the following in an article by Associated Press writer Christopher Bodeen: But China has angrily rejected all calls for dialogue, and Tibets hardline Communist Party chief [Zhang Qingli ] was quoted Wednesday in a particularly viscous attack on the Dalai Lama The quotation left me picturing His Holiness covered with something like tar, awaiting the application of feathers. Bodeen probably meant vicious. vicious [vishus] bad, villainous, reprehensible, mean, depraved, noxious, savage Vicious comes from the Latin word Latin vitiosus, meaning full of faults, bad, corrupt. The word viscous, on the other hand, comes from a Latin word viscosus, meaning full of birdlime. viscous [viskus] viscid, gelatinous, gluey, sticky. Syrup is viscous. Oil is viscous. (No oil in Tibet.) While were at it, birdlime is a sticky substance smeared on a surface with the intention of catching birds. It was usually made of holly bark, but mashed up mistletoe berries work. The lime in birdlime comes from a Latin verb meaning to smear. The Bodeen article goes on to say that the Chinese government regularly insults the Dalai Lama as a matter of policy: Critics say China fuels such anger [as provoked the recent demonstrations] through harsh restrictions on Tibetan culture and Buddhism - including routine vilification of the Dalai Lama, who is deeply revered by most Tibetans. Which brings us to another V word. vilification The action of vilifying by means of abusive language. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Medicine and Pharmacology2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words - 1

Medicine and Pharmacology2 - Essay Example here is also evidence showing that ATP is a cotransmitter with norepinephrine, where ATP may be a cotransmitter with acetylcholine (ACh) in certain postganglionic parasympathetic nerves (Brake and Julius, 1996). The purinergic receptors are found on the cell surface. These may be divided into the adenosine (P1) receptors and the receptors for ATP (P2X and P2Y receptors). P1 and P2 receptors have been known to have various subtypes. There are four adenosine receptors, namely A1, A2A, A2B, and A3 and multiple subtypes of P2X and P2Y receptors throughout the body. It has been suggested that these adenosine receptors and the P2Y receptors act via the G proteins to mediate physiological responses. On the other hand, the P2X receptors act through ion channels that are ligand gated (Burnstock, 2006). Following extensive research, it has now been established that ATP is a cotransmitter with classic transmitters both at in both the peripheral and central nervous systems, and through purinergic systems, purines are also powerful extracellular messengers to nonneuronal cells. The presence of purinergic signaling system in extraneural tissues such as exocrine, endocrine, secretory, endothelial, musculo skeletal, immune, and inflammatory cellular systems has been established (Burnstock and Knight, 2004). As this indicates, the distribution and functional roles of these P2 receptors have been elucidated further with ongoing research. In short, the purinergic signaling system is a rapid synaptic neurotransmitter system. This is involved in contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle and in exocrine and endocrine secretion. It has been evident now that purinergic signaling regulates many long-term cellular events in all tissues. These functions include cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and death in cell development, cellular regeneration, and hence in wound healing. Another area is embryonic development where both P2X and P2Y receptors play prominent roles both
